Bed Assessments

Getting in and out safely, staying comfortable, and managing pressure and night-time risk.

Refer for this

What it is

Assessment of the bed and the transfers around it. The equipment, the mattress, and the route from bed to bathroom at 3am.

What’s involved

  • Transfers in and out assessed, with and without equipment
  • Hi-lo and adjustable bed options where they genuinely change the transfer
  • Mattress selection for pressure care and comfort
  • Bed rails, poles and transfer aids, with the restraint considerations that come with them
  • Night-time toileting and how the bed sits relative to that route

Who it’s for

People whose day starts and ends with a difficult transfer, who are at risk of pressure injury, or who are unsafe getting up at night.

Common questions

Are bed rails a restraint?

They can be, and that is exactly why they need assessing rather than ordering. A rail that stops someone falling out is very different from one that stops someone getting out, and the difference matters legally as well as clinically.

Do I need a hospital bed at home?

Often not. An adjustable bed changes some transfers and not others, and it changes the room. We look at whether it earns its place.

Will the equipment fit the room?

We measure on site. Bedrooms are usually the tightest room in the house once equipment is in them.
