Guides
Written for the people who send us referrals: support coordinators, plan managers and GPs.
These are written for the people who send us referrals rather than for search engines. Every one of them started as something we found ourselves explaining on the phone more than once: what belongs in a referral, what a functional capacity assessment can and cannot decide, why assistive technology takes as long as it does.
The NDIS side is described in general terms on purpose. Cost thresholds and processing times change, and a figure that was right last year is worse than no figure at all, so anything that moves is left to the NDIS rather than repeated here. What is here is the part that does not move: the sequence, the evidence, and where the delays actually sit.
If something you need explaining is not covered, say so. The list grows from the questions we get asked.
- 5 min read What to put in an OT referral so it isn’t sent back What an occupational therapist needs on day one, what slows a referral down, and what happens after you send it.
- 6 min read What an FCA covers, and what it doesn’t What a functional capacity assessment looks at, what it cannot decide, and what you get at the end of one.
- 6 min read How an NDIS assistive technology assessment actually runs The steps from referral to delivered equipment, why the trial matters most, and what actually causes the delays.
- 6 min read What a telehealth OT assessment actually looks like What a telehealth occupational therapy assessment involves: the secure video link, what gets covered, and the parts that still need someone on site.
