Functional Capacity Assessments
An FCA describes what someone can actually do day to day, what gets in the way, and what would change it. It is the document most NDIS funding decisions rest on.

Assessment of strengths and limitations across daily living, mobility, communication, cognition and social participation.
What’s involved
- Seen where the difficulty actually happens. Usually at home or in the community
- Standardised measures used where they add something, not by default
- Function described across good days and bad days, not just the day we visited
- A written report your funder can act on
More detail: what an FCA covers, and what it doesn’t.

Common questions
What is a functional capacity assessment?
An FCA is a structured assessment of how a person manages everyday activities, self-care, mobility, communication, cognition and community participation, and what support they need. The report is written so a funder can understand the level of support required and why.
How long does an FCA take?
The assessment itself is usually a single visit of a couple of hours, sometimes split across two if fatigue is a factor. The written report follows separately.
Do you assess at home?
Wherever possible, yes. A kitchen tells you more about meal preparation than a clinic room does.
Can family or a support worker be there?
Yes, and it usually helps. People who see someone day to day often notice things the person themselves has stopped noticing.
